new skills training sign Shunk PADeciding to work in a new occupation and enroll in a trade school near Shunk PA are serious decisions that will profoundly impact your long term career. But with so many trade schools to pick from, just how do you approach locating the ideal one? Not only do you have to confirm that you will get the comprehensive training needed to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. A number of potential students make the mistake of choosing a vocational school just because the campus is nearest to their residence or where the work. Others may be attracted to the one that has the lowest tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the training are critical considerations when evaluating trade school options, but they can not be the only ones. Other variables including reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will review a few of those questions shortly in this post. But to start with, let’s talk about some of the vocation options that are available as well as the availability of online schools.

Vocational Schools Online

Shunk PA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Shunk PA students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online training, such as learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and provides comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new vocation.

Points to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Shunk PA trade schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Shunk PA area and all over the United States to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school evaluations. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial 2 aspects you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Shunk PA area trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Shunk PA is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It could also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Shunk PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Shunk PA area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Shunk PA company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Shunk PA, check that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

    Francis R. Shunk

Shunk was born on August 7, 1788, in Trappe, Pennsylvania, to a poor farming family of German descent. His great-grandfather Simon Schunck was born in Saarland and settled in the Province of Pennsylvania.[1][2] Francis R. Shunk began working on his father's farm at age 10. He continued to attend school, and by age 16 had received his qualification as a teacher and started working in the schools.

Originally a Democratic-Republican in politics, and later a Democrat, in 1812 Shunk was appointed Clerk to state Surveyor General Andrew Porter, the father of Governor David R. Porter. Shunk served in the Pennsylvania militia during the War of 1812, and took part in the 1814 defense of Baltimore.

After the war, Shunk was appointed Principal Clerk of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. In 1820, he married Jane Findlay, daughter of Pennsylvania Governor and Senator, William Findlay, and Pennsylvania First Lady Nancy Irwin Findlay.
