Not only do you need to ascertain that you will get the comprehensive training required to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. A number of potential students make the mistake of enrolling in a trade school just because the campus is closest to their residence or place of employment. Or they might be attracted to the school that charges the most affordable tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the training are important considerations when assessing trade school options, but they must not be the only ones. Additional factors such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will review a few of those questions later in this article. But first, let’s look at a few of the vocation options that are offered including the accessibility of online schools.

Online Trade Schools

Shippensburg PA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Shippensburg PA students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online training, for instance learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new profession.

Concerns to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Shippensburg PA trade schoolsAfter you have selected the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to attain, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Shippensburg PA area and across the United States to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial 2 variables you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Shippensburg PA area trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire an excellent education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Shippensburg PA is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It may also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Shippensburg PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Shippensburg PA area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Shippensburg PA contracting company if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Shippensburg PA, confirm that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
