Not only do you have to ascertain that you will get the extensive training needed to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. A number of prospective students make the mistake of enrolling in a vocational school just because the campus is closest to their residence or place of employment. Or they may gravitate to the school that charges the most affordable tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the training are critical considerations when assessing trade school options, but they must not be the sole ones. Added considerations such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will review several of those questions shortly in this post. But first, let’s look at a few of the vocation options that are available including the availability of online schools.

Vocational Schools Online

Pocopson PA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Pocopson PA students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online education, such as learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online education with on campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to find out before choosing an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

Questions to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Pocopson PA trade schoolsAfter you have chosen the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Pocopson PA area and across the USA to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of important qualifications when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial two variables you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Pocopson PA area trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive a quality education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Pocopson PA is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It might also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Pocopson PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Pocopson PA area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Pocopson PA company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with several of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Pocopson PA, check that the programs you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
