Learning a Vocation Online

Pine Grove Mills PA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Pine Grove Mills PA students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online training, for instance studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online instruction with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and provides in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Pine Grove Mills PA trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Pine Grove Mills PA area and throughout the USA to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Pine Grove Mills PA area vocational programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Also, many states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Pine Grove Mills PA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It might also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Pine Grove Mills PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Pine Grove Mills PA area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Pine Grove Mills PA company if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to a few of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Pine Grove Mills PA, confirm that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
