Online Trade Schools

Hellertown PA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Hellertown PA students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online classes, for instance learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to determine before choosing an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Points to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Hellertown PA trade schoolsWhen you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Hellertown PA area and all over the USA to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school evaluations. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first two aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Hellertown PA area trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get an excellent education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Hellertown PA is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It may also mean that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Hellertown PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Hellertown PA area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Hellertown PA contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Hellertown PA, verify that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
