But with so many trade schools to select from, just how do you approach finding the right one? Not only do you need to ascertain that you will obtain the extensive training needed to succeed in your new field, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Some potential students make the error of choosing a vocational school simply because the campus is closest to their home or place of employment. Or they might gravitate to the school that charges the most affordable tuition. Of course the cost and location of the training are significant considerations when assessing trade school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Other variables such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will review several of those questions shortly in this post. But to start with, let’s look at a few of the vocation options that are available including the availability of online programs.

Online Vocational Schools

Friedens PA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Friedens PA students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online education, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and provides comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Friedens PA trade schoolsAs soon as you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Friedens PA area and across the USA to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first two factors you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Friedens PA area technical schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Friedens PA is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Friedens PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Friedens PA area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Friedens PA contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Friedens PA, check that the schools you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
