Learning a Trade Online

East Pittsburgh PA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with East Pittsburgh PA students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online training, for example learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and provides comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Things to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask East Pittsburgh PA trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you want to obtain, either online or on campus, you can begin to decrease your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  East Pittsburgh PA area and across the United States to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of important qualifications when making school comparisons. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first 2 variables you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous East Pittsburgh PA area technical programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive a superior education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, many states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help assess the quality of a trade school near East Pittsburgh PA is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It could also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the East Pittsburgh PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with East Pittsburgh PA area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local East Pittsburgh PA contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near East Pittsburgh PA, verify that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
