Online Vocational Schools

Chandlers Valley PA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Chandlers Valley PA students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online training, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will blend online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to learn a new trade.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Chandlers Valley PA trade schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many technical schools in the  Chandlers Valley PA area and across the USA to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school comparisons. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first 2 aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Chandlers Valley PA area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive a superior education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Chandlers Valley PA is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It may also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Chandlers Valley PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Chandlers Valley PA area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Chandlers Valley PA contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to several of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Chandlers Valley PA, check that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
