Learning a Trade Online

Berrysburg PA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Berrysburg PA students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online classes, such as studying safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to determine before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and provides in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Points to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Berrysburg PA trade schoolsOnce you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Berrysburg PA area and throughout the Country to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first two aspects you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Berrysburg PA area technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain an excellent education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Berrysburg PA is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It might also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Berrysburg PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Berrysburg PA area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Berrysburg PA contractor if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Berrysburg PA, verify that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
