Learning a Vocation Online

Aultman PA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Aultman PA students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online learning, for instance learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online education with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

Concerns to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Aultman PA trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many trade schools in the  Aultman PA area and all over the Country to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first two variables you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Aultman PA area vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire a superior education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Aultman PA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It may also signify that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Aultman PA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Aultman PA area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Aultman PA company if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Pennsylvania and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Aultman PA, check that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
