Online Trade Schools

Ravia OK student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Ravia OK students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online education, such as learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Ravia OK trade schoolsAfter you have selected the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many technical schools in the  Ravia OK area and all over the USA to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first 2 factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Ravia OK area technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get a superior education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help determine the quality of a trade school near Ravia OK is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It could also indicate that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Ravia OK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Ravia OK area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Ravia OK company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with several of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Oklahoma and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Ravia OK, confirm that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
