Not only do you need to confirm that you will get the comprehensive training required to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Many students make the error of enrolling in a vocational school simply because the campus is closest to their residence or place of employment. Or they might gravitate to the school that has the most affordable tuition. Of course the cost and location of the training are important considerations when assessing trade school options, but they should not be the only ones. Added considerations such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will cover some of those questions shortly in this article. But to start with, let’s look at some of the trade options that are available as well as the availability of online programs.

Online Trade Schools

Leflore OK student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Leflore OK students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online training, for example learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Points to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Leflore OK trade schoolsAfter you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Leflore OK area and throughout the Country to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first 2 factors you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Leflore OK area trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Leflore OK is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Leflore OK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Leflore OK area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Leflore OK company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Oklahoma and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Leflore OK, confirm that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.

    George W. Harkins

Elected as principal chief after the national council deposed his maternal uncle, Greenwood LeFlore, Harkins was elected judge of the Red River District in Indian Territory in 1834. In 1850, he was chosen as chief of the Apukshunnubbee District (one of three) of the Choctaw Nation and served until 1857.[3]

Harkins was born into a high-status Choctaw clan through his mother, Louisa "Lusony" LeFlore. His father was John Harkins, a European American. His oldest maternal uncle, traditionally the most important mentor to a boy child, was Greenwood LeFlore, the chief of the Choctaw. Harkins learned from both his cultures but identified as Choctaw first and foremost.

Harkins married Salina Gardner and Lily Folsom, Daughter of Chief David Folsom and Rhoda Nail. It is said that he also married Laris Narcissy Leflore and had two children, but no evidence of that has been found.
