But with so many trade schools to select from, exactly how do you approach finding the ideal one? Not only do you need to make certain that you will obtain the extensive training needed to be successful in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. A number of prospective students make the error of selecting a trade school just because the campus is nearest to their home or place of employment. Others may be attracted to the one that charges the lowest tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the programs are significant factors when assessing vocational school options, but they can not be the sole ones. Added factors such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will cover a few of those questions shortly in this post. But first, let’s talk about a few of the trade options that are available as well as the accessibility of online programs.

Learning a Trade Online

Jet OK student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Jet OK students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online education, for example studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online education with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before choosing an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to learn a new profession.

What to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Jet OK trade schoolsAfter you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Jet OK area and all over the USA to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school evaluations. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial 2 aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Jet OK area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain a quality education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Jet OK is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate could suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Jet OK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Jet OK area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Jet OK contracting company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Oklahoma and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Jet OK, verify that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.

    Jet, Oklahoma

The community of Jet was founded by six unmarried brothers: Joseph, Trigg, Newt, Warner, John, and Richard Jett, who established homesteads in the former Cherokee Outlet, shortly after its opening to settlement by non-Indians. The brothers erected buildings and opened a general store on Richard's land. The Jet post office was established in 1894, with Warner Jett as the first postmaster. The community grew into a small town, and Jet incorporated in 1900.[6]

The Frisco Townsite Company, owned by the Denver, Enid and Gulf Railroad (DE&G) (acquired by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1907), surveyed a plot of land about 2 miles (3.2 km) west of the original town and relocated Jet during 1905-1906. By August, 1907, the town had Baptist, Mennonite, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches in addition to seven general stores, two banks, two hotels, two grain elevators, plus a small school under construction. At the time of statehood in 1907, Jet had a population of 213 people.[6]

    Jet is located at 36°39′58″N 98°10′52″W / 36.66611°N 98.18111°W / 36.66611; -98.18111 (36.6661416, -98.1811787).[4] It is 12 miles (19 km) east-southeast of the county seat, Cherokee.[6]
