Not only do you need to make certain that you will obtain the complete training necessary to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Others might gravitate to the one that charges the lowest tuition. Other considerations such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical also. We will cover several of those questions shortly in this post. But first, let’s talk about a few of the trade options that are offered including the availability of online programs.

Learning a Vocation Online

Waynesburg OH student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Waynesburg OH students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online learning, such as studying safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will blend online education with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to find out before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Questions to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Waynesburg OH trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to attain, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Waynesburg OH area and throughout the United States to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two factors you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Waynesburg OH area trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near Waynesburg OH is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It may also signify that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Waynesburg OH area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Waynesburg OH area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Waynesburg OH company if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with a few of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Ohio and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Waynesburg OH, confirm that the programs you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
