Online Vocational Schools

Shadyside OH student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Shadyside OH students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online training, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to ask before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

Things to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Shadyside OH trade schoolsOnce you have picked the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Shadyside OH area and across the Country to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first 2 factors you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Shadyside OH area vocational programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a trade school near Shadyside OH is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Shadyside OH area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Shadyside OH area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Shadyside OH contracting company if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Ohio and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Shadyside OH, confirm that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
