Learning a Trade Online

Richmond Dale OH student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Richmond Dale OH students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online education, for instance studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Concerns to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Richmond Dale OH trade schoolsAfter you have picked the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Richmond Dale OH area and across the United States to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first 2 factors you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Richmond Dale OH area technical programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help assess the quality of a trade school near Richmond Dale OH is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It may also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Richmond Dale OH area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Richmond Dale OH area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Richmond Dale OH contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Ohio and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Richmond Dale OH, confirm that the schools you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
