Learning a Vocation Online

Roanoke Rapids NC student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Roanoke Rapids NC students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online classes, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on-campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to learn a new profession.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Roanoke Rapids NC trade schoolsAfter you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Roanoke Rapids NC area and throughout the United States to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school evaluations. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first two variables you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Roanoke Rapids NC area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you get a quality education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Roanoke Rapids NC is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It might also indicate that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Roanoke Rapids NC area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Roanoke Rapids NC area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Roanoke Rapids NC contractor if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in North Carolina and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Roanoke Rapids NC, verify that the schools you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
