Learning a Vocation Online

Mars Hill NC student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Mars Hill NC students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online learning, such as studying driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to determine before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and delivers in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new trade.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Mars Hill NC trade schoolsOnce you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you wish to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Mars Hill NC area and all over the Country to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the initial 2 factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Mars Hill NC area trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire an excellent education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Mars Hill NC is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It may also mean that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Mars Hill NC area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Mars Hill NC area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Mars Hill NC contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in North Carolina and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Mars Hill NC, confirm that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Mars Hill, North Carolina

Mars Hill is a town in Madison County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 U.S. Census, and was estimated at 2,197 in 2016 by the U.S. Census. It is the home of Mars Hill University, the name of which was inspired by Acts 17:22.[4] The town is located 15 miles (24 km) due north of Asheville, western North Carolina's largest city. Interstate 26 passes a mile east of the town. It is part of the Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Long occupied by indigenous peoples, this area was not settled by European Americans much before the American Revolutionary War. They were mostly yeomen and subsistence farmers, many of whom had Scots-Irish ethnicity. The California Creek Missionary Baptist Church, Mars Hill College Historic District, Mars Hill High School, and Thomas J. Murray House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[5]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.9 square miles (4.9 km2), all of it land. The town has an elevation of 2,330 feet (710 m), so the climate of the area is considerably cooler than might be expected of a town in a southern state.
