Vocational Schools Online

Lenoir NC student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Lenoir NC students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for example learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and provides comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to learn a new profession.

Questions to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Lenoir NC trade schoolsWhen you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you wish to earn, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Lenoir NC area and all over the Country to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Lenoir NC area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain an excellent education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help assess the quality of a trade school near Lenoir NC is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Lenoir NC area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Lenoir NC area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Lenoir NC contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in North Carolina and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Lenoir NC, confirm that the schools you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
