However with so many vocational schools to pick from, exactly how do you undertake locating the best one? Not only do you have to make sure that you will obtain the complete training necessary to succeed in your new field, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. A number of prospective students make the mistake of choosing a trade school simply because the campus is nearest to their home or place of employment. Or they may be attracted to the school that has the lowest tuition. Of course the location and cost of the training are important considerations when assessing trade school options, but they must not be the only ones. Additional variables such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will cover several of those questions later in this article. But first, let’s look at some of the trade options that are available as well as the accessibility of online programs.

Learning a Vocation Online

Westmoreland NY student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Westmoreland NY students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online learning, for example learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to determine before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and provides in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Questions to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Westmoreland NY trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Westmoreland NY area and across the United States to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first 2 variables you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Westmoreland NY area trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Westmoreland NY is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It might also signify that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or employment in the Westmoreland NY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Westmoreland NY area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Westmoreland NY contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in New York and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Westmoreland NY, verify that the programs you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
