Of course the location and cost of the training are critical factors when evaluating vocational school options, but they can not be the only ones. Other factors including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important as well. We will review some of those questions later in this post. But first, let’s talk about a few of the trade options that are available as well as the accessibility of online schools.

Online Trade Schools

Thiells NY student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Thiells NY students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online learning, such as learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online education with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to learn a new profession.

Questions to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Thiells NY trade schoolsOnce you have decided on the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Thiells NY area and across the Country to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the initial two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Thiells NY area trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get a superior education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Thiells NY is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It could also mean that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Thiells NY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Thiells NY area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Thiells NY contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in New York and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Thiells NY, verify that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
