However with numerous trade schools to choose from, just how do you approach locating the ideal one? Not only do you have to make certain that you will obtain the comprehensive training necessary to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Many prospective students make the error of selecting a trade school simply because the campus is nearest to their home or where the work. Or they may gravitate to the one that charges the most affordable tuition. Of course the location and cost of the programs are critical considerations when assessing trade school options, but they can not be the only ones. Added factors such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are important as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will address a few of those questions later in this post. But first, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are available as well as the accessibility of online schools.

Learning a Vocation Online

Stony Point NY student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Stony Point NY students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online training, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Points to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Stony Point NY trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Stony Point NY area and across the United States to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school comparisons. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first 2 factors you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Stony Point NY area trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get a superior education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help assess the quality of a trade school near Stony Point NY is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It may also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Stony Point NY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Stony Point NY area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Stony Point NY company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in New York and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Stony Point NY, check that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
