However with so many trade schools to choose from, exactly how do you undertake locating the right one? Not only do you have to make certain that you will obtain the comprehensive training needed to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Many prospective students make the mistake of choosing a trade school just because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Or they may gravitate to the school that charges the most affordable tuition. Of course the location and cost of the training are important factors when analyzing vocational school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Other factors including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will address a few of those questions shortly in this post. But first, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are available as well as the availability of online programs.

Vocational Schools Online

Spring Valley NY student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Spring Valley NY students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online training, such as studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Points to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Spring Valley NY trade schoolsAfter you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you wish to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Spring Valley NY area and throughout the USA to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of important qualifications when making school evaluations. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial two aspects you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Spring Valley NY area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Spring Valley NY is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It may also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Spring Valley NY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Spring Valley NY area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Spring Valley NY company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in New York and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Spring Valley NY, confirm that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Spring Valley, New York

Spring Valley is a suburb of New York City, a village in the towns of Ramapo and Clarkstown in Rockland County, New York, United States. It is located north of Chestnut Ridge, east of Airmont and Monsey, south of Hillcrest, and west of Nanuet. The population was 31,347 at the 2010 census,[3] making it the 2nd most populous community in Rockland County, after New City.

Spring Valley spans the border of two towns, occupying an eastern portion of the town of Ramapo and a small western portion of the town of Clarkstown. The village is next to the New York State Thruway (Interstate 87) and is served by a New Jersey Transit train station at the terminus of the Pascack Valley Line.

In 1842, the New York & Erie Railroad called this part of the territory "Pascack", after a stream by the same name. The residents of the area decided to call the place Spring Valley – one certain large spring in the Valley Pond being responsible for the name. Prior to naming the territory Spring Valley, it was called Scotland, named after their homeland, by Scotsmen who had settled in the area.
