However with so many trade schools to choose from, just how do you go about locating the right one? Not only do you need to make sure that you will obtain the complete training necessary to be successful in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Many students make the mistake of choosing a trade school simply because the campus is closest to their residence or where the work. Or they may gravitate to the school that has the lowest tuition. Of course the cost and location of the training are significant considerations when evaluating trade school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Other variables including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will cover some of those questions later in this post. But to start with, let’s look at a few of the vocation options that are offered including the availability of online programs.

Trade Schools Online

Rego Park NY student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Rego Park NY students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online training, such as learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to find out before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and provides in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Things to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Rego Park NY trade schoolsOnce you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to obtain, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Rego Park NY area and all over the Country to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first two variables you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Rego Park NY area technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain an excellent education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Rego Park NY is how long it has been in operation. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It could also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Rego Park NY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Rego Park NY area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Rego Park NY contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with a few of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in New York and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Rego Park NY, verify that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.

    Rego Park, Queens

Rego Park is a neighborhood in the borough of Queens in New York City. Rego Park is bordered to the north by Elmhurst and Corona, the east and south by Forest Hills, and the west by Middle Village. Rego Park's boundaries include Queens Boulevard, the Long Island Expressway, Woodhaven Boulevard, and Yellowstone Boulevard. There is a large Jewish population in the neighborhood, which features high-rise apartment buildings and detached houses, as well as a large commercial zone.

Rego Park is built on a swamp called the Hempstead Swamp, which once extended to St. John's Cemetery in Middle Village. By 1653, though, English and Dutch farmers moved into the area and founded a community called Whitepot, which was a part of the Township of Newtown. Whitepot is believed to be so named because the original Dutch settlers named the area "Whiteput", or "hollow creek"; later, English settlers Anglicized the name.[5] The Remsen family created a burial ground, which is still located on Alderton Street near Metropolitan Avenue. The colonists also founded the Whitepot School, which operated until the late 19th century.[5]

In the Hempstead Swamp, which turned out to be good for farming, the colonists cultivated hay, straw, rye, corn, oats, and vegetables.[5] The original Dutch, English, and German farmers sold their produce in Manhattan; by the end of the 19th century, though, Chinese farmers moved in and sold their goods exclusively to Chinatown.[5]
