Online Vocational Schools

Nanuet NY student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Nanuet NY students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online training, for instance studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online education with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to determine before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to learn a new profession.

Things to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Nanuet NY trade schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Nanuet NY area and throughout the Country to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial two aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Nanuet NY area trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Also, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Nanuet NY is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment in the Nanuet NY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Nanuet NY area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Nanuet NY contractor if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in New York and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Nanuet NY, check that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
