Learning a Vocation Online

Hartwick NY student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Hartwick NY students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online learning, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will blend online instruction with on campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Hartwick NY trade schoolsAfter you have decided on the trade and type of certificate or degree that you wish to attain, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Hartwick NY area and across the United States to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first 2 aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Hartwick NY area trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get a superior education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near Hartwick NY is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It might also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Hartwick NY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Hartwick NY area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Hartwick NY company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in New York and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Hartwick NY, verify that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Hartwick College

Hartwick College is a private college in Oneonta, New York. The institution's origin is rooted in the founding of Hartwick Seminary in 1797 through the will of John Christopher Hartwick. In 1927, Hartwick Seminary moved to expand into a four-year college and was offered land by the city of Oneonta to move to Hartwick College's current location.[1] The school has 1,200 undergraduate students from 30 states and 22 countries, 187 faculty members and the student-faculty ratio is 11-1.[2]

Hartwick Seminary was founded in 1797 through the will of John Christopher Hartwick, a Lutheran minister from Germany who led several mission congregations of early settlers along the Hudson River and the Mohawk River in what is now upstate New York. His dream of establishing an institution of higher learning became a reality shortly after his death, with the founding of Hartwick Seminary in 1797. In 1816, the New York State Legislature incorporated the new school—the first Lutheran seminary in America—as a classical academy and theological seminary in Hartwick, near Cooperstown. The school moved to its present location in Oneonta in 1928, when Hartwick was incorporated as a four-year college. The land for the campus was donated by the City of Oneonta. Bresee Hall, today the oldest building on campus, was designed by noted architect John Russell Pope and built in 1928. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. The college's ties to the Lutheran Church ended in the 1960s and it now carries no religious affiliation.

Hartwick College offers 31 majors and 24 areas of study leading to a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. In addition, it offers 11 minors, pre-professional programs in law, medicine, engineering and allied health professions; and five cooperative programs in engineering, law, business, and physical and occupational therapy. Students can also choose a concentration within their major.
