Learning a Vocation Online

Congers NY student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Congers NY students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online learning, for example studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to acquire a new profession.

Concerns to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Congers NY trade schoolsOnce you have decided on the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Congers NY area and throughout the Country to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first 2 aspects you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Congers NY area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it may assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Congers NY is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It might also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Congers NY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Congers NY area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Congers NY company if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in New York and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Congers NY, check that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
