Not only do you need to ascertain that you will receive the comprehensive training required to be successful in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Many prospective students make the mistake of enrolling in a vocational school simply because the campus is nearest to their home or place of employment. Others may be attracted to the one that charges the most affordable tuition. Of course the cost and location of the programs are important considerations when assessing vocational school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Added factors including reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will review a few of those questions later in this post. But to start with, let’s look at some of the vocation options that are available as well as the accessibility of online schools.

Trade Schools Online

Elyria NE student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Elyria NE students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online training, for example studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will blend online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to acquire a new trade.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Elyria NE trade schoolsAfter you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you wish to attain, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Elyria NE area and throughout the United States to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two factors you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Elyria NE area trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire a superior education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, some states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Elyria NE is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate could suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It may also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Elyria NE area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Elyria NE area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Elyria NE contracting company if they can provide some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Nebraska and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Elyria NE, check that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
