Online Trade Schools

Big Springs NE student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Big Springs NE students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online learning, for instance learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online education with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to ask before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Big Springs NE trade schoolsOnce you have selected the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Big Springs NE area and across the USA to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the initial 2 aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Big Springs NE area trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help assess the quality of a trade school near Big Springs NE is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It may also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Big Springs NE area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Big Springs NE area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Big Springs NE company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Nebraska and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Big Springs NE, verify that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

The first name of the settlement was "Lone Tree", after a large cottonwood tree standing alone on the prairie near the town. It was believed to be over 100 years old at the time of first settlement and could be seen by riders on the Pony Express and travelers on the Oregon Trail. Sam Bass's gang reportedly divided $60,000 in loot under the tree from an 1877 robbery of a Union Pacific train.[6]

Big Springs was platted in 1884,[7] and named for the stream that runs through town.[8] The Big Springs post office, established in 1884, was officially called Bigspring until 1943.[9] The village of Big Springs was incorporated in 1917.[10]

In 1884, the first church services were held by the Rev. E. E. Mount in the Phelps Hotel. The first church in the county, called Prospect Church, was a sod building constructed 9 miles (14 km) north of town in 1887.[6]
