Learning a Trade Online

Webb MS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Webb MS students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online training, for instance studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Webb MS trade schoolsOnce you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to attain, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Webb MS area and all over the USA to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of important qualifications when making school assessments. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two factors you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Webb MS area technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get a quality education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Webb MS is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate could suggest that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Webb MS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Webb MS area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Webb MS company if they can provide some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Mississippi and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Webb MS, confirm that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.

    Webb, Mississippi

Webb was founded circa 1880. The first post office was founded in 1880 and named Hood for one of the earlier settlers. In 1882, Judge James L.A. Webb, a Confederate veteran and a University of North Carolina graduate, operated the only store there and later the Hood Masonic Lodge was built. There was one saloon at that time called "The Razzle Dazzle". The town was incorporated in 1905.

In those days most of the groceries and necessities were brought to Hood by flat bottom boat from Sharkey, being hauled down the river from Friars Point. Cassidy Bayou was navigable then and was maintained by the government from Sharkey to Hood. The town was later renamed in honor of Judge Webb.

Marrell Dixon, the son of Earnestine Dixon, became the first person to play any type of professional sports (Semi Pro Football Memphis Panthers-2007, Tupelo Fireants (Arena Football) 2003-2004). He was also the first person from Webb to play football at Mississippi State University.
