Online Trade Schools

De Kalb MS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with De Kalb MS students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online learning, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers in-depth practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new trade.

What to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask De Kalb MS trade schoolsWhen you have decided on the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  De Kalb MS area and all over the United States to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of key qualifications when making school evaluations. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first two factors you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous De Kalb MS area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near De Kalb MS is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It could also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the De Kalb MS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with De Kalb MS area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local De Kalb MS contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Mississippi and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near De Kalb MS, confirm that the schools you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
