Trade Schools Online

Bitely MI student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Bitely MI students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online classes, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online education with on-campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to determine before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Bitely MI trade schoolsAs soon as you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to attain, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Bitely MI area and across the United States to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Bitely MI area trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire a superior education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Bitely MI is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It may also mean that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Bitely MI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Bitely MI area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Bitely MI company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Michigan and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Bitely MI, check that the programs you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
