Trade Schools Online

Whiting ME student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Whiting ME students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new vocation.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Whiting ME trade schoolsAs soon as you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many technical schools in the  Whiting ME area and all over the United States to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school assessments. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial 2 factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Whiting ME area technical programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire a quality education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, some states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Whiting ME is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It could also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Whiting ME area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Whiting ME area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Whiting ME contractor if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Maine and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Whiting ME, check that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
