Learning a Vocation Online

Sabattus ME student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Sabattus ME students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online training, such as learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will blend online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and provides comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

Points to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Sabattus ME trade schoolsOnce you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many technical schools in the  Sabattus ME area and all over the Country to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first two variables you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Sabattus ME area vocational programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help determine the quality of a trade school near Sabattus ME is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also suggest that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Sabattus ME area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Sabattus ME area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Sabattus ME contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Maine and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Sabattus ME, check that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
