Online Vocational Schools

East Machias ME student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with East Machias ME students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online classes, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online education with on campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and provides comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to learn a new trade.

They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It may also mean that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the East Machias ME area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with East Machias ME area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local East Machias ME contracting company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Maine and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near East Machias ME, confirm that the programs you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment.
