Learning a Trade Online

Hosston LA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Hosston LA students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online classes, for example studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers in-depth practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Hosston LA trade schoolsAfter you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Hosston LA area and throughout the United States to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school comparisons. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first 2 factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Hosston LA area trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get a quality education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Hosston LA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It could also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Hosston LA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Hosston LA area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Hosston LA company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Louisiana and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Hosston LA, verify that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
