Learning a Vocation Online

Campti LA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Campti LA students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online learning, such as learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to ask before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new profession.

Things to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Campti LA trade schoolsAfter you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Campti LA area and throughout the United States to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first 2 factors you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Campti LA area vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Campti LA is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It might also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Campti LA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Campti LA area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Campti LA contractor if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Louisiana and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Campti LA, check that the programs you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Campti, Louisiana

Campti is a town in the northern part of Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,057 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Natchitoches Micropolitan Statistical Area. Campti is a flat area of mostly farmland. It sets on the eastern bank of the Red River. Considerable cattle are also raised in the general area.

During the American Civil War, Union General A.J. Smith, with two brigades, reached Campti to assist Admiral David Dixon Porter's gunboats on the Red River there. Confederate General St. John Richardson Liddell's scattered troops had been harassing the Union fleet but quickly retreated as Union General A. J. Smith's overwhelming force arrived on April 13, 1864. Smith and his men burned what was left of Campti, on April 14, 1863. The gunboats were returned safely upriver to Grand Ecore in Natchitoches Parish.[3]

Tradition maintains that the name "Campti" was derived from the name of a Caddo Indian chief, known as "Le Roi Campti" (The King Campti).[4] Church records in Natchitoches show that a French missionary, Père Valentin, visited the community of Campti around 1745; this was the first written record of Campti during the period of French Louisiana.
