Learning a Trade Online

Wilmore KY student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Wilmore KY students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online education, for example learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and provides in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Accredited.  Many Wilmore KY area vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive a superior education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Wilmore KY is how long it has been in business. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also signify that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Wilmore KY area.

An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Wilmore KY contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to a few of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Wilmore KY, check that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment.
