Online Trade Schools

Waynesburg KY student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Waynesburg KY students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online learning, for instance studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new trade.

What to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Waynesburg KY trade schoolsAfter you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to obtain, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Waynesburg KY area and all over the United States to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first two factors you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Waynesburg KY area technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get a superior education, it may assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Waynesburg KY is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It could also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Waynesburg KY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Waynesburg KY area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Waynesburg KY contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Waynesburg KY, confirm that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
