Others may gravitate to the one that charges the most affordable tuition. Of course the location and cost of the training are critical considerations when assessing trade school options, but they should not be the only ones. Added considerations such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will cover a few of those questions later in this post. But to start with, let’s talk about some of the trade options that are available including the availability of online schools.

Trade Schools Online

Oakland KY student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Oakland KY students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online classes, such as studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to learn a new trade.

Points to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Oakland KY trade schoolsOnce you have picked the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to decrease your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many trade schools in the  Oakland KY area and all over the USA to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first two factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Oakland KY area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive a quality education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Oakland KY is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It may also indicate that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Oakland KY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Oakland KY area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Oakland KY contractor if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Oakland KY, confirm that the schools you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
