But with numerous trade schools to select from, just how do you approach identifying the best one? Not only do you have to ascertain that you will get the complete training required to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Others may gravitate to the school that has the lowest tuition. Added factors such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical also. We will cover several of those questions shortly in this article. But first, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are offered as well as the accessibility of online schools.

Vocational Schools Online

Independence KY student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Independence KY students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online education, for example learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Points to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Independence KY trade schoolsAfter you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you wish to earn, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many technical schools in the  Independence KY area and throughout the Country to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first 2 aspects you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Independence KY area technical programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Independence KY is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It may also signify that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Independence KY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Independence KY area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Independence KY contractor if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Independence KY, check that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
