Online Vocational Schools

Hickory KY student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Hickory KY students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online classes, for example studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to learn a new trade.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Hickory KY trade schoolsAfter you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to earn, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Hickory KY area and throughout the Country to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school assessments. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial 2 variables you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Hickory KY area trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get an excellent education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, many states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Hickory KY is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It may also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Hickory KY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Hickory KY area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Hickory KY company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Hickory KY, verify that the schools you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
