Vocational Schools Online

Flatgap KY student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Flatgap KY students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online training, for example learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online education with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Points to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Flatgap KY trade schoolsWhen you have picked the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you want to attain, either online or on campus, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Flatgap KY area and across the Country to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial 2 aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Flatgap KY area trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive a quality education, it may assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near Flatgap KY is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It could also indicate that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or employment in the Flatgap KY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Flatgap KY area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Flatgap KY contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Flatgap KY, check that the programs you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
