Learning a Trade Online

Elizabethtown KY student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Elizabethtown KY students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online classes, for example learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online studying and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Points to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Elizabethtown KY trade schoolsWhen you have picked the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Elizabethtown KY area and across the Country to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first 2 aspects you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Elizabethtown KY area technical programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire a quality education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Elizabethtown KY is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It might also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Elizabethtown KY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Elizabethtown KY area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Elizabethtown KY contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Elizabethtown KY, verify that the programs you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
