But with numerous vocational schools to choose from, exactly how do you go about finding the right one? Not only do you need to make certain that you will get the extensive training needed to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Some prospective students make the mistake of selecting a trade school just because the campus is closest to their residence or place of employment. Or they may gravitate to the school that charges the lowest tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the training are significant considerations when assessing trade school options, but they must not be the sole ones. Other considerations including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will cover some of those questions later in this post. But to start with, let’s talk about some of the trade options that are available as well as the accessibility of online programs.

Vocational Schools Online

Waterville KS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Waterville KS students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online training, such as learning driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online instruction with on campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to ask before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Waterville KS trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to attain, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Waterville KS area and throughout the Country to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first 2 factors you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Waterville KS area trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Waterville KS is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may indicate that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It could also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Waterville KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Waterville KS area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Waterville KS company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Waterville KS, confirm that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
