new skills training sign Lebanon KSDeciding to work in a new occupation and enroll in a trade school near Lebanon KS are serious decisions that will profoundly influence your long term career. But with so many vocational schools to pick from, exactly how do you undertake locating the best one? Not only do you need to confirm that you will obtain the comprehensive training needed to succeed in your new occupation, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Many potential students make the mistake of enrolling in a vocational school just because the campus is nearest to their home or where the work. Others may be attracted to the one that has the most affordable tuition. Of course the location and cost of the training are critical factors when evaluating trade school options, but they must not be the sole ones. Other variables such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will review some of those questions later in this post. But first, let’s talk about some of the trade options that are available including the availability of online programs.

Trade Schools Online

Lebanon KS student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Lebanon KS students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online education, for example learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online education with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new trade.

Questions to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Lebanon KS trade schoolsWhen you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you want to acquire, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Lebanon KS area and throughout the Country to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the initial two variables you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Lebanon KS area technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire a superior education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Lebanon KS is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It could also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Lebanon KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Lebanon KS area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Lebanon KS company if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Lebanon KS, confirm that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
