Online Trade Schools

Jetmore KS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Jetmore KS students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online training, for instance studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to learn a new profession.

Points to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Jetmore KS trade schoolsAs soon as you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to acquire, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Jetmore KS area and all over the USA to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of key qualifications when making school evaluations. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Jetmore KS area trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive a superior education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Jetmore KS is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It could also mean that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Jetmore KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Jetmore KS area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Jetmore KS company if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Jetmore KS, confirm that the schools you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
