new skills training sign Great Bend KSDeciding to enter into a new profession and enroll in a vocational school near Great Bend KS are serious decisions that will greatly influence your long term career. But with numerous trade schools to choose from, exactly how do you go about identifying the best one? Not only do you have to confirm that you will obtain the complete training needed to be successful in your new occupation, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. A number of students make the mistake of enrolling in a trade school just because the campus is closest to their residence or where the work. Others may gravitate to the school that has the most affordable tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the programs are critical factors when analyzing trade school options, but they should not be the only ones. Added factors such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will review several of those questions later in this post. But first, let’s look at some of the vocation options that are available as well as the availability of online schools.

Trade Schools Online

Great Bend KS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Great Bend KS students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online classes, such as learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will incorporate online education with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Great Bend KS trade schoolsOnce you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you desire to earn, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many technical schools in the  Great Bend KS area and across the USA to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of important qualifications when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the initial 2 variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Great Bend KS area vocational schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get a superior education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Great Bend KS is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Great Bend KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Great Bend KS area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Great Bend KS contractor if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Great Bend KS, verify that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.

    Great Bend, Kansas

Great Bend is a city in and the county seat of Barton County, Kansas, United States.[6] It is named for its location at the point where the course of the Arkansas River bends east then southeast.[7] As of the 2010 census, the population of the city was 15,995.[8]

Prior to American settlement of the area, the site of Great Bend was located in the northern reaches of Kiowa territory.[9] Claimed first by France as part of Louisiana and later acquired by the United States with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, it lay within the area organized by the U.S. as Kansas Territory in 1854.[10][11] Kansas became a state in 1861, and the state government delineated the surrounding area as Barton County in 1867.[11][12]

The first settlers of the area arrived in 1870. Living in sod houses and dugouts, they worked as buffalo hunters since trampling by bison herds precluded crop farming.[13] In 1871, the Great Bend Town Company, anticipating the westward construction of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, founded Great Bend at a site roughly three miles west of Fort Zarah on the Santa Fe Trail.[13][14] They named the settlement after its location at the "great bend" in the Arkansas River where the river's course turns eastward.[7] The town began to grow as more settlers arrived over the following year and opened several businesses.
