Online Trade Schools

Enterprise KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Enterprise KS students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online training, such as learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to determine before choosing an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Questions to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Enterprise KS trade schoolsAs soon as you have picked the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to attain, either online or on campus, you can begin to decrease your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Enterprise KS area and throughout the United States to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school assessments. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the first two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Enterprise KS area technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Enterprise KS is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Enterprise KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Enterprise KS area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Enterprise KS contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Enterprise KS, confirm that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
