new skills training sign Edgerton KSDeciding to work in a new occupation and enroll in a trade school near Edgerton KS are serious decisions that will profoundly impact your long term career. However with numerous vocational schools to select from, just how do you undertake locating the best one? Not only do you need to make sure that you will obtain the extensive training required to be successful in your new field, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Many prospective students make the mistake of choosing a vocational school just because the campus is nearest to their residence or where the work. Or they might gravitate to the one that has the most affordable tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the programs are significant factors when evaluating vocational school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Other considerations including reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will review several of those questions later in this post. But to start with, let’s talk about a few of the trade options that are offered as well as the accessibility of online schools.

Learning a Trade Online

Edgerton KS student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Edgerton KS students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online education, such as studying safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online education with on campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new profession.

Points to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Edgerton KS trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many trade schools in the  Edgerton KS area and all over the United States to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first 2 aspects you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Edgerton KS area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire a quality education, it may assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Edgerton KS is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It might also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Edgerton KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Edgerton KS area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Edgerton KS contractor if they can provide some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Edgerton KS, confirm that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
